Disney World Fl will no longer host high school graduation celebrations, known as Grad Nite after those scheduled for 2011. Grad Nite at DisneyLand CA. will continue as normal.
With more leisure guests visiting in the springtime, it’s become challenging to schedule special events during April and May. Instead, graduates will have new opportunities to celebrate in the parks at more flexible and convenient times.
Disney has recently seen more and more students visiting Walt Disney World as part of a broader senior class trip. And activities such as youth sports competitions, performing arts programs, including performances, workshops and festivals, and educational programs now give teens chances to experience Walt Disney World virtually any time of the year. Through special pricing, Disneywill be offering students the flexibility to visit and celebrate their achievements at the parks when they want to. In Florida, school groups can continue the tradition with a special one-day, one-park ticket for $55 valid anytime of the year. Also, Disney Youth Programs can arrange customized experiences.

Important Information for rental Guests in the Four corners area

Census counters have already been spotted in Four Corners neighborhoods, and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd is warning residents to make certain they know who they’re opening their doors to.

“All U.S. Census Bureau workers will be properly credentialed,” Judd said in a recent news release. “It is vital that you verify the identity of anyone who alleges to be a U.S. Census worker.”

Taken every 10 years, the census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution as a means to count the population. The results play a major role in determining voting districts, the number of congressional representatives, school districting and certain types of government funding.

While most households received a census form in the mail to be filled out and returned, the Census Bureau has hired an army of canvassers who are going from door to door to cover those households that did not return the forms, the canvassing that will go on through the middle of summer.

That many people out knocking on doors is an invitation for con artists and thieves to take advantage of the situation, and Judd listed several ways residents can make sure they are talking to a census worker.

*Census workers have a badge identifying who they are, a U.S. Census Bureau canvas bag and will have a privacy notice with them.

*They are knocking on doors only to verify address information.

*Residents should not provide a Social Security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone, including official Census Bureau workers.

*Census workers will not ask for money, Judd warned, and residents should not give them money if they do ask for it.

*They will also not contact you by email, so residents should not click on a link or open an attachment that purports to be from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Judd also pointed out that residents should not invite anyone they don’t know into their homes.

Jose Cestero of the Census Bureau’s regional office in Orlando said residents should also be aware that none of the information provided will be shared with immigration or law enforcement officials.

“That information is strictly confidential by law,” he told The Reporter recently.

That means that there is no reason for anyone to resist giving the information to a census worker who has the proper identification.

Universal - World of Harry Potter could now open around June 12, 2010

Sea World offers $5 admission to kids under 12

Hoping to propel attendance hurt by a weak economy and a recent whale trainer's death, SeaWorld has dramatically dropped the daily admission price for all U.S. children ages 3 through 12 to $5.

Normal admission is $78.95 for ages 9 through 12, $68.50 for 3 through 8. The park will donate all $5 entrance fees to parents' choice of five independent, nonprofit marine wildlife research or conservation agencies. The discount tickets are available only online, and the deal ends Dec. 31.

Four Corners May Get Bus Line

Negotiations are under way for a bus system along West U.S. 192 that would extend from Kissimmee to U.S. 27.

FOUR CORNERS | Osceola County is now negotiating with a private company to bring a new bus transportation system into the Four Corners area, one that could serve both tourists and employees in the local hospitality industry.

This is a great opportunity," said Hector Lizasuain, the county's West U.S. 192 coordinator. He said negotiations are now underway for possible bus service into Four Corners."

"It's something we've needed for a long time," Lizasuain said.

Lizasuain said that while funding is still an issue, the proposed transportation system is seen as a creative way to market the U.S. 192 tourism corridor, which has a good share of hotels, restaurants, gift shops and miniature golf courses to lure in travelers.

"It becomes a marketing tool if you're able to provide transportation to Orange Lake Resort or Old Town or other places along the corridor," Lizasuain said. "It's another thing that's going to help the Four Corners area. I think it's a great opportunity for us."

The council hopes to piggyback on plans by the Florida Department of Transportation to widen U.S. 192 from four to six lanes, starting about 600 feet west of Black Lake Road, then running into Four Corners.

Lizasuain said a transportation system along U.S. 192 would make the project even more attractive because it could take tourists from their hotels to other spots on the highway, while doing the same for workers in the local hospitality industry.

"This is great for those who now walk to our hotels and restaurants," he said. "I think this is something we have always needed. International Drive has a trolley system that transports people."

"World of Harry Potter" theme park – Universal said yesterday that the Florida park will open on June 18

The $200-million "Wizarding World of Harry Potter" will be contained within a 20-acre expansion of the existing Islands of Adventure park. Universal has called the park a "totally immersive environment." The signature ride of the park, called "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey," will take riders through scenes from the books. Visitors will also be able to step into the town of Hogsmeade, complete with train station and fabled locomotive, all standing in the shadow, of course, of Hogwarts Castle.

Stores will include Zonko's, Honeydukes Sweet Shop, and a wand shop full of deliberately dusty wand boxes. Hungry visitors will be able to dine on "traditional British fare" and Butterbeer (Harry's favorite drink – said to taste a lot like a blend of cream soda and butterscotch) at the Three Broomsticks Restaurant & Hogshead Pub. Fans into Quidditch can participate in a simulated Triwizard Tournament.

Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling is not expected to show up at the park until mid-summer. However, says People magazine, her presence "has been integral in the creation of the 20-acre theme park since Day One." Rowling's approval have been necessary for the "look and feel of the land," and, apparently, even the taste of Butterbeer.

Visitors to US to pay at least $10 fee for ESTA From

Visitors to the US will have to pay a fee of at least $10 following the passing of the Travel Promotion Act by the US Senate.

The act, which is expected to become law within 10 days, means travellers will have to pay to complete the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation form before travelling.

It is thought the charge could be as much as $17, taking into account the cost of setting up the transactional website and credit card fees.

A Corporation for Travel Promotion will be set up to push the US as a tourist destination to source markets and to provide information to prospective visitors and travel professionals overseas. This will be funded by the charge for visitors, which will be directed into a Travel Promotion Fund.

President Obama is expected to sign the measure in the next few days.

Visit USA chairwoman Kate Burgess-Craddy said: “This has been needed for a long time. The US has lost market share because other countries have upped their game and the US hasn’t been marketing itself enough. We don’t welcome the charge but as a proportion of the cost of going to the US, it is not really very much.”

She claimed the UK travel industry was likely to benefit from the act in the long term.

“We should see a good chunk of the money being spent here,” added Burgess-Craddy.

“Visit USA will be lobbying to make sure the money is spent with operators and airlines. Hopefully this will mean more bookings for the UK trade.”

The move has been welcomed by the travel industry in the US, which has been lobbying for the government to get involved in promoting the US as a tourist destination for some time.

    Harry Potter - Universal Studios
    - Up until now, Universal has been sticking with a vague "spring 2010" opening date World of Harry Potter. With March fast approaching, speculation has been growing about just when the drawbridge might be lowered on Hogwarts Castle. While nothing's been confirmed, it's now clear that the land will be opened by at least May 28, which is the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of the summer season here in the US. It's likely that Universal will have a soft opening of Potter well before May 28.

    ICE! at Gaylord Palms

An exciting highlight of our Best of Florida Christmas celebration!
    November 14, 2009 – January 3, 2010

Open daily including holidays, hours vary.

For the lowest ticket prices, purchase your tickets in advance, online!

Prepare for the coolest winter on record as Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee presents ICE!, a walk-through Christmas attraction hand-carved from nearly TWO MILLION pounds of ice.

Fueled by a dose of holiday spirit and tempered by a cool pinch of irony, sunny Central Florida is home to one of then nation’s most spectacular (and unusual) art attractions, now in its seventh year. Who says the holidays in Florida are all about sunshine and palm trees, anyway?

Inside a simulated winter environment, guests are immersed in a whimsical wonderland of larger-than-life, three-dimensional hand-carved ice monuments and scenes, including fantastic frozen creations, slippery ice speed slides, and heart-warming holiday vistas. As for the chill, visitors are given oversized parkas to stay comfortable inside the attraction, which is kept at a chilly 9 degrees.

This year, ICE! will take guests on a trip to the North Pole. And, tag along on Santa’s journey, beginning with an encounter with Old Man Winter, through an arctic forest, and into the middle of a Christmas Carnival, complete with a life-size carousel! Next, chill-seekers will be able to explore Santa’s ornament room, climb onto his oversized knee (an unusual photo op!), and watch as he and reindeer take flight.

The attraction’s signature scene—a life-size Nativity carved completely of crystal-clear ice—has been described as one of the most breathtaking depictions of the birth of Christ. Dramatic lighting and a stirring narrative track give guests an opportunity to pause and reflect on the story behind the season.

The award-winning Kissimmee attraction is carved by a team of 40 artisans from Harbin, China. The talented artisans spend more than a month in Kissimmee creating this one-of-a-kind attraction. Harbin is best known for its annual International Ice and Snow Festival, where more than 2,000 sculptors annually carve a 100-acre walk-through ice park, using ice from the nearby Songhua River.

ICE! is open daily from November 14, 2009 – January 3, 2010, including holidays.

For the lowest ticket prices, purchase your tickets in advance, online! For more information, or to purchase your tickets by phone, please call (407) 586-4423.

Note: ICE! is kept at a frigid 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure to dress appropriately: closed-toe shoes and long pants are required. Hooded winter coats will be provided for your warmth and comfort inside the attraction. Hats and gloves are suggested and can be purchased on site at the ICE! House gift shop.

    Emergency Evacuation Policy

Polk County Emergency Management Division recommend in-place shelter as the primary option during a disaster.
For those unable to remain in place the remaining choices should be considered in order of preference.
Whichever of the following options is selected, it is advised that a 72-hour survival kit be assembled and ready, a course of action be planned, and that the plans be executed as soon as practicable before the disaster hits.
    The recommended options are:

    1. In-place Shelter - plan to remain in residence during the emergency, if possible.
    2. Evacuate to Friends or Relative Residence - if forced to evacuate, it is less traumatic for all concerned to be sheltered with familiar people, in more comfortable surroundings.
    3. Evacuate the Area - other people leaving this area or areas in the projected path of the storm will also be on the road; leave at least 48-72 hours before the storm is expected to strike.
    4. Evacuate to the Hotel/Motel/ - make arrangements early as rooms will fill quickly with other evacuees.
    5. Evacuate to a Public Shelter - please see the Public Shelter policy.
A copy of the the Polk County Public Shelter Map, can be downloaded from the link at the end of this item.

    Emergency Public Shelters

Not all public shelters are automatically activated for each emergency.
They are opened as needed and are not pre-assigned by geographic area.
During an emergency please monitor Polk County Government Television, other local television and radio stations for open shelter information.
Have your 72-Hour survival kit ready to take with you.

Disney is offering a free day's admission to 1 million guests who complete a day of volunteer work next year.

The "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" program will provide certified volunteers with a one-day ticket to any park at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., or Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., in 2010.

Disney is partnering with HandsOn Network, a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities, to connect people with projects and to certify that the work was done.

"We are trying to inspire 1 million people to volunteer in their communities and we're inspiring them to do that by giving them a free day at a Disney park," Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Rasulo called the promotion "very timely," citing the increased needs of nonprofits in the weak economy, as well as President Obama's national volunteering initiative.

"The spirit of our country is very much behind that, whether it's the first family or whether it's the average family," Rasulo said.

Duncan Dickson, who teaches theme park management at the University of Central Florida's Rosen School of Hospitality Management in Orlando, said the volunteer initiative is "a smart marketing move."

Dickson said Disney will get good buzz for encouraging volunteerism plus free publicity from the nonprofits that benefit. And even when theme parks let people in for free, they make their money back in other ways, Dickson said.

"You make a lot of money in popcorn and T-shirts and other things," Dickson said.

Some guests who come in for free would have bought tickets anyway, but the free offer will also bring in visitors who wouldn't otherwise have made the trip, and they'll bring paying guests with them, Dickson added. "Anything that pushes the turnstiles is good for business," Dickson said.

HandsOn Network has 70,000 affiliated agencies, from Habitat for Humanity to local food banks, churches, health care centers, and educational programs. Once their service is verified by HandsOn, volunteers print out an online certificate that can be redeemed at a Disney park.

Would-be volunteers must register online with Disney and must be residents of the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico to be eligible for the free admission. The work must be performed in 2010, and the park visit must take place by Dec. 15, 2010. Participants must be 18 or older to sign up for the program, but volunteer work done by children ages 6-17 qualifies for a free ticket as long as kids are accompanied by an adult when volunteering. Unused admission certificates can be donated to a charity designated by Disney.

Examples of volunteer opportunities currently listed on HandsOn's Web site range from drivers and bingo callers to a book drive organizer at a senior center in Scranton, Pa., to a docent at the Oregon Maritime Museum in Portland.

Volunteers who have multiday tickets or annual passes can get a special FASTPASS for up to six people in lieu of the voucher.

DVD rental kiosks are beginning to appear close to Highlands Reserve Orlando.

Redbox who are one of the largest players in the market have installed DVD rental boxes at locations that are close to our luxury orlando vacation rental homes

Redbox, which allows customers to rent and return DVDs at more than 15,000 kiosk locations nationwide, is becoming hard to miss in Polk County. After debuting here with about 17 locations in late 2008, the Illnois-based firm now counts more than 50 kiosks at 40 sites in Polk, mostly drug stores and supermarkets.

However, a new competitor looms. After testing DVD kiosks in select stores the past few years, Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets is preparing to gradually introduce Blockbuster Express DVD machines in the majority of the chain's 1,000-plus locations.

Most Florida stores will have a kiosk by Nov. 1.

"Within the next month the majority of the Polk County locations will have one," said Publix spokeswoman Shannon Patten. Currently, Publix has just five kiosks in local stores, all in Lakeland.

"All of our new stores will be opening with a Blockbuster Express in the future as long as we can fit them in with the size and format of the store," Patten said.

Similar to Redbox, the Blockbuster Express machines rent DVDs for $1 per night using a credit card.DVD rental locations close to our vacation homes are:
    Redbox
    Walmart - Hwy 27/US192
    Wallgreens - Hwy27/Dean Still Road
    Wallgreens - Champions Gate
Blockbuster - Publix - hope to have a kiosk in their store on Sand Mine Road this fall

    CYPRESS GARDENS CLOSES - AGAIN

Cypress Gardens and Splash Island Water Park in Winter Haven abruptly closed Wednesday afternoon, leaving in doubt the future of an attraction that has lured visitors with flowering plants, Southern belles and water-skiing exhibitions since 1936. Wednesday's sudden announcement marked the third time since 2003 that Cypress Gardens has closed.

A lawyer speaking for the owners, says that they are looking to sell property to someone who will reopen it as a theme park.

The park's owners released a brief statement Wednesday afternoon announcing the immediate closing of the twin attractions.
Co-owners Rob Harper and Brian Philpot said they are "in the process of negotiating with several potential purchasers and lessees for all or part of the property, and do not feel it is fair to our employees, the guests, or the public to continue operations heading into the fall with the future of the property in flux."

Harper and Philpot have owned Cypress Gardens since 2007 through Land South Holdings based in Mulberry.
Neither Harper nor Philpot returned messages Wednesday evening.

There have been reports in recent months that Legoland, a California theme park, was negotiating to buy Cypress Gardens, but the local owners have not confirmed that. A spokesman for Legoland could not be reached Wednesday.

Bob Morgan, a spokesman for the theme park, said employees learned of the closing Wednesday at 4 p.m., when the owners gave him the statement to be posted on the Cypress Gardens Web site.
The parks had approximately 200 employees when they opened in March after being closed several months.

Rick Dantzler, a Winter Haven lawyer and former state senator, has been representing Land South Holdings.
He said Philpot told him Wednesday the owners are committed to finding buyers who will reopen Cypress Gardens as a theme park.

Bob Gernert, director of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, said the attraction's recent history of closings and management changes has been frustrating.

"Winter Haven and Cypress Gardens have had a long, wonderful love affair, but we hate to see it struggle," Gernert said.
"For the last year, the park has not functioned well. It seemed to lack direction and the crowds weren't there. In general, I think the starting and stopping and the roller coaster it's been through has been damaging."

Gernert said he is hopeful the park can find a new buyer, but he also is concerned that Cypress Gardens has yet to find a niche where it can hold its own against competing attractions in Orlando.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo chose the D23 Expo to announce an ambitious new project in Orlando that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo chose the D23 Expo, the first-ever gathering of Disney devotees, to announce the ambitious new project in Orlando that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland. He also confirmed speculation that Disney would update the "Star Tours" attraction based on George Lucas' original "Star Wars" trilogy, adding 3-D effects to the ride at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.

The projects come as Disney has been working to maintain attendance levels at the parks through aggressive hotel discounts, ticket give-always and other promotions that have kept customers walking through the turnstiles but also cut into operating income. The parks are a major profit center for the entertainment giant, contributing about one-third of the company's revenues.

Most attention was focused on Orlando, where Disney plans to change how its visitors interact with three of its best-known princesses, Cinderella, Aurora of "Sleeping Beauty" and Belle from "Beauty and the Beast." Young visitors now spend a fleeting moment, grabbing an autograph or posing for a photo.

Chris Beatty, senior concept designer for Walt Disney Imagineering, said the parks are seeking to create an experience that's more extended and participatory. Disney will construct individual areas - a princess' castle, cottage or chateau - where visitors interact with the character.

For example, visitors to Cinderella's country chateau would watch, along with a group, as the Fairy Godmother transforms her rags into a ball gown.

They might even have a chance to share a dance, before she leaves for the ball.

"It's a pretty ambitious show experience, with special effects," Beatty said. "We're really trying to bring these stories to life like never before."

Other changes in Orlando include a redesigned Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride, which would double the capacity and, for the first time replace the ride queues with a circus tent with bleachers and an interactive three-ring circus. A new "Be Our Guest" restaurant, based on the 1991 film "Beauty and the Beast," invites visitors to dine in one of three rooms from the Beast's castle.

Pixie Hollow, an experience similar to the one that opened at Disneyland in November 2008, where visitors meet Tinker Bell and other Disney fairies, opens in 2013.
